Heroes. What would we do without them?

When we first begin playing World War Rising, we realize very quickly that our heroes help our gameplay in a multitude of ways.  Heroes help us grow, they help our attacks and defenses become stronger, and provide a myriad of qualities that make them very necessary to grow and protect to be as tough as possible in the game.

Another thing we quickly realize when we begin is that our heroes can be captured by the enemy and even killed, causing a major inconvenience for a particular amount of time that can prevent us from growing, defending properly, or completing much-needed events for all the prizes and goodies we can earn.  In this article, we will look at a few benefits of heroes, why they are important, and different strategies to keep them out of the hands of your enemies.

What are Some Hero Benefits?

There are two main reasons why heroes are important.  The first reason is that certain heroes provide growth cost reductions.  The second reason is adding to your strength when attacking or defending.  Let’s look at these benefits.

Growth Reductions

Riggs, the first hero you have access to, is important for a multitude of reasons, one of the main being that he will help reduce the cost of growth.  Riggs will help reduce the cost of leveling up all buildings, doing research, AND training troops.  This is an extremely valuable asset, especially in the beginning before many other avenues of cost reductions come around.

Later in the game, you receive Bruce for even better savings in cost reductions!  I should also mention Ember, a later hero that will help reduce the cost of upgrading particular Mercenary Troops. All three of these heroes can save a tremendous amount of time and money as you grow your Command Center.

Strength

All heroes have a certain strength value, some much more than others.  It is important to look at what each hero’s actual value is.  For example, Ronen and Eli help to strengthen Wall Defenses.  If that is part of your strategy, it is important to have them used and skilled correctly to benefit fully from using your defenses to their fullest potential.

Attacking Heroes such as Xira and Aria are used for different reasons as well.  Xira is super quick with rallies while Aria packs a mean punch.  Which heroes you use for your attacks depends on what you are trying to achieve.  Regardless, attacking without a hero will cause you to lose millions in stat points you could be taking advantage of.

Xira is the First Attack Focused Hero

Aside from attacking and defense, some heroes help you hit Syndicates stronger, while some help attack or defend Garrisons.  Make sure to benefit from each hero to the fullest, carefully looking at and skilling for the stats you need the most.

Do You Always Need Your Hero?

The short answer is no.  However, without your hero, you could be missing out on millions of stats that would otherwise benefit your gameplay.  There are times when you don’t need a hero to defend with or attack with necessarily, but realize you will never be at your absolute best without.

If you are a F2P or low spending player, losing your hero to an enemy can be particularly devastating.  When you don’t spend often, you must rely on in-game items that can be earned or given by teammates.  If you do not have your hero to reduce the cost of growth, it can be difficult to complete many events.

Because of this, we have to make sure not to lose our heroes, so that we don’t miss out when it comes time to use them to their full potential.

Keeping Your Hero Safe in General

The ideal way to keep your hero safe is by having a sound defense.  This can be done in many ways and is far too extensive to be included in this one article.

Some important Defensive tactics to think about:

  • Skill Hero properly for the task.
  • Use and skill the correct Squad for what you are trying to accomplish.
  • Build and Maintain a proper troop composition.
  • Use the correct gear and emblems.
  • Use Boosts when appropriate.
  • Level buildings that give valuable battle stats.
  • ALWAYS complete research as high as possible before leveling your Command Center.

Some important Attack tactics to think about:

  • Make sure to know your enemy.  Look at your enemy’s troop compositions and their research completed.
  • Use the proper hero and squad for the task.
  • Use the proper gear.
  • Make sure to keep up with research.
  • Don’t forget to benefit from boosts such as Banishment Sight Boosts and Battle Marking your target.
  • Make sure you have a supply of Cyanide pills if needed.

Keeping Your Hero Safe as a F2P Player

As a low spender, it is unlikely you have the best attack or defense around.  However, it also doesn’t mean you are the worst.  All F2P players know the game still costs, it’s just a different currency in the form of time.  Grinding events is imperative to that growth and protection. Oftentimes we don’t have the fuel to shield 24/7.  Let’s look at a few ways that you can keep your hero safe when not spending financially.

Ghost Rallies

Ghost Rallies are an easy way to keep your hero safe for up to 8 hours at a time. Simply set a rally on a dead base using the 8 hour time frame, add what troops you can and your hero, and send.  When troops and heroes are in a rally, they are no longer present in your base. Therefore, when an attacker hits, they are technically not around to kill. (Subsequently, this can also be used as a trapping technique discussed in other articles, see Trapping Techniques (Newer Regions) and Trapping Techniques Version 2.0 (Older Regions)) An added bonus to this is setting the rally on a base far away so that if you miss your 8 hour mark to reset, you get extra time as the rally marches across the map, which leads us into our next strategy, long marches.

Long Marches

Depending on the amount of time you need to keep your hero safe, a long march may be all you need to do.  You can experiment with times across the map and pick locations suited to the amount of time needed for protection.  Remember an attacker can not get your hero if it is not home.  Marching across the war zone will add a significant amount of time to the march if more time is needed.

Send to an Ally

I personally have always liked this method of hero protection.  If you have biggs in your alliance that you trust and can communicate with, ask them to hold your hero.  You can drop tags (leave the alliance) and send your hero to that person to “capture”.  Make sure that the person you send to understands that they will not be able to shield while holding your hero.  This method can also be used to help protect troops.  If you can find teammates that will not be going anywhere (remember reinforcements vacate when the holder ports), then sending your troop reinforcements is an option to keep them safe if they are over your hospital capacity. Make sure you don’t send as reinforcements until after you have dropped tags to send off your hero.  Leaving the alliance will bring all reinforcements back.

The best thing about this method is that you can ask the big to release your hero anytime you need it.  It gives you a lot of control without having to use speeds to get marches back. When you are done using your hero for an event or growth, you can send it right back again!

Don’t Put Your Hero on a Tile

There is really no reason to have your hero on a tile; ESPECIALLY unbubbled. This is one of the first places attackers look for an easy hero kill.  Minimize them doing so by never adding the hero in the first place.  Granted some gear will shield a tile for you, but typically it is not for very long, and often the shield drops before a march will return. It is easy to forget if you don’t set a timer each time.

If you are trying to gather resources, a better bet would be to switch to sending one plane and gathering tokens to buy resources in the black market instead.  Your hero stays safe and you still get the items you need.

If you decide this is still a better method for you, be sure to set a timer so you do not forget to renew the bubble on your tile.  Just look for the march on your deployment list that includes your hero’s picture to pull back.

BUBBLE

The ONLY guarantee to protect your hero (outside of game glitches or bugs) is to shield up, or bubble.  You can help save fuel costs by switching to Ronen and not setting for more than 11 hours at a time.  Be sure to always complete events that contain fuel, port as little as possible, and gather fuel from your fuel extractor every few hours to get the most fuel you are able so that you can shield more often.  If for some reason you seem to experience shield drops, take a screenshot when you bubble so that when you tell customer service there was an issue, they know exactly when to look for the time to see what went wrong.

If you are not in the game, Shields is your safest bet!

Player Experiences

I spoke with the WWR Community about their experiences and suggestions for keeping heroes safe.  Here is what they had to say:

“Hiding hero. Smaller bases or recently zeroed bases have some fun with a squad and a few troops plus a hero. Attacker wants the hero…

1) Anti Scout off, so attacker can scout and see that hero is home

2) as attacker approaches, ghost rally hero

3) after attack (or multiple attacks), cancel rally

4) repeat, repeat.

It’s not a points-earner, but does keep an attacker busy and not hitting your teammates.“ –LucyNtheSky (War~) Region #533, Flint

“The best way to keep your hero is to be on Team Goober. If you’re not, you’ll lose your hero like Marco (@war) and Limpo (Deka)”-Desttop (Sefi) Region #539, Algorab
